Geography

Location- The Maldives are an island chain situated in the Indian Ocean about 340 km south-southwest of India. They are about 892 km southwest from Colombo which is a city right on the coast of Sri Lanka.
Size- This island chain consists of about 1,190 coral islands spread out over about 90,000 kilometers making it one of the most spread out countries in the world. Compared to the continental U.S. area the Maldives only cover about 1% of the U.S.
Terrain- They consist of nearly 1,200 small islands, only 200 of which are inhabited. Most consist of white sandy beaches and palm trees. They are just about 8 feet above sea level making them very suseptible to tsunamis and tropical storms. Most of the small islands are surrounded by deep blue lagoons.
